Perlite is a double edge sword. It's great for adding aeration to the peat, but it floats. So every time it rains a little more will work is way up from the top layer. The ninth green has become very wet this autumn and it appears that it is struggling to dry out. Turface is calcined (baked in an extremely hot oven) clay, heated to the melting point so the tiny particles fuse together and it becomes ceramic-like. When I put the wet on the dry, I always mix immediately, incorporating the wet well into the dry before any separation occurs. Seems like when I was a baker (a long time ago) we added the wet ingredients to the big commercial mixers first and then added the pre formulated dry concoctions a bit at a time as the dry became incorporated with the wet.
