Labor would be the same and materials very little more. As for the cost savings, light-duty grinders/belt sanders show up on craigslist and yard sales fairly regularly at a reasonable cost. I have two 1"x42" sanders I picked up for $25 each. I also picked up a 4"x48" edge sander for $100.

I would rather work some over time and pay for a grinder already made, or make knives and sell them - than making my own grinder. I originally made the no weld grinder. Probably 40 hrs into making it, plus the cost of the wheels and motor.

Posted February 20, 2018. The rule of thumb is ~1kW into the motor for every horsepower that comes out of it so your 1.5kW would probably be closer to 1.5hp, maybe a bit more on a good day. More would be nice to have, but 1.5kW will make a lot of knives if the extra money just isn't there. -Brian.
