Larger drums spin somewhere around 1300-1500 rpm. Having said that - the Porter Cable 8-inch VS is actually rated at 2000 for the low end, but the flex drums seem to work fine. When using the small drums, you have to use a little patience and not try to take off too much at a time. Work the piece firmly and use the whole sanding drum.
