Use a short piece of 1x2 scrap, and glue a piece of thin ply to one edge. The ply should overhang on one side just enough to catch the front edge of the tool-rest. When setting the tool-rest, just hook the jig on the front edge and move the rest in until it stops. With the distance set, lock down the tool-rest and remove the jig.

Sharpening the skew is a little harder but the jig helps a lot. At least the angles at the cutting edge of the chisels are consistent and correct. I would like to make a grinding table for use on the other side of the grinder and doing scrapers and parting tools. I have most of the design but haven't finalised it yet.

Cut from 3/16 x 1 1/4 bar stock a 6 inch length. Clamp the other 1/8 piece to the bolted-on piece. Lay the 3/16 piece on where the cam lock handle cam post was, mark the location on clamped-on piece, remove and tack weld together. Bore and file a slotted hole. (You will need metric bolts and nuts.)

To start, I cut out the parts that make up the base of the jig that holds the stone. In this instance, I'm using a stone that is 2″ x 8″ long and 3/4″ thick, but the base can be made to fit any size stone. I recommend one that is 2″ x 6″ x 3/4″ with a fine grit side and a coarse grit side: I then assembled it with glue and brads.
