The short version is, based on the waveforms that I received, I turned my OPDA slightly counterclockwise which brought the Cam Position Sensor signal inline with the Crankshaft Position Sensor signal.

Hopefully your machine shop was careful when grinding the journals. You will not find an offset grind on the center main by checking with a micrometer. Instead, put bearing shells in only the front and rear block journals, lube and set the crank down on those two and check the center journal runout as the crank is rotated by hand.

I'm not familiar with those rods, but on many the cap can be reversed accidentally (180 degrees out of position) which will cause the problem you describe. The crank should turn freely with the rod bolts torqued. Also check the part numbers on ALL of your bearing shells to make sure that one of them is not marked undersized.

Hi Gang. As an actual user of a hand crank grinder, I have to say using one is like patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time.. The dream of having a grinder coast while grinding is not practical. Enough mass to overcome the energy loss for more than a moment will be difficult to get moving with a single hand crank.

Take the block, crank and bearing to the machine shop. They will have the proper mikes to measure crank, block housing bore and bearing thickness with a ball mike. You need to understand indexing the crank and removing the very small amount is just about impossible. One might think that small amount could be removed with a polishing belt.

I've installed a 184 on a 2015 Q5 and no grinding was needed. And a 181 on a 2012 s4 that needed grinding. Don't be afraid of grinding a few mm off the face of this boss and let it stop you from going with a pulley size you'd prefer. It's a extra 5-10 min to grind or file it. Remove this plate and start the engine and see if the gears in the bell housing are turning. If not the bolts holding the center gear to the crankshaft may have sheared off. You should be able to go in through the hole and see if the center gear is loose. If the gears are turning then you have two failures, the charge pump and the hydraulic pump.

It is easy to shim it out, 1 guy used aluminum foil others used thin washers. The hard part is closing the gap. You need to do some grinding on the sensor. What I found interesting is various guys reported their gaps & they were all over the place. Some closer than my 0.021", others a lot more.

Take out all the spark plugs, and screw the piston stop into the #1 cylinder. Slowly rotate the engine with a breaker bar until you feel it touch the piston stop. Mark the balancer with a sharpie or something that you can see but comes off later. Then rotate counterclockwise until you feel it hit again. Mark another mark.

Old Suzukis used to have the same problem and this method worked a lot of times. Its a lot of work by hand and you have to be the judge on the condition of the crank end before you start.

You want all three journals running true within .0002"-.0003", checked between dead centers, using a 10millionths dial indicator and a blunted chisel. RE: ASP 180 fs FYI I've been adjusting the low end and high end needles in and out. The high speed setting is OK. But the low end has been adjusted in / out approx. 1/8 of a turn at the time, till the engine stopps of too rich and too lean setting. Nothing helps. There's more to balancing an engine than just "balancing" the crankshaft. There are two different formulas used and added together to figure the bob weight, rotating weight and reciprocating weight.
